Coeliac Testing FAQs

  • Coeliac testing is a medical process used to determine whether you have coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by consuming gluten.

  • Anyone experiencing persistent symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, unexplained weight loss or those with a family history of the disease, should consider testing.

  • The process begins with a Coeliac Blood Test to detect specific antibodies. To support accurate diagnoses, results are cross-checked with a Coeliac Genetic Test. If required, a follow-up biopsy of the small intestine in a hospital setting may be organised for you.

  • The Coeliac Genetic Test does not require special preparation.

However, the Coeliac Blood Test requires patients to continue eating foods containing gluten before testing, as removing gluten beforehand can affect the accuracy of the results. You should eat 4 slices of ordinary bread per day for 6 weeks before the test.

  • The blood test involves a simple needle prick, and while the biopsy is more invasive, it’s usually performed under sedation or anaesthesia, minimising discomfort.

  • Blood test results are typically available within 2 weeks. Biopsy results may take slightly longer.

  • Yes, children can be tested if they show symptoms or have a family history of the condition. Early diagnosis can prevent growth and developmental issues.

  • If you’re diagnosed with coeliac disease, we will advise switching to a lifelong gluten-free diet to manage symptoms and improve overall health.

  • If your test is negative, your doctor may investigate other conditions like non-coeliac gluten sensitivity or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

  • Early testing helps prevent long-term complications such as malnutrition, osteoporosis, infertility or an increased risk of certain cancers.

  • Home testing kits are available, but they may not be as accurate as clinical testing.

A negative blood test does not always exclude coeliac disease, as a minority of coeliacs may also have an IgA deficiency. Genetic tests and further biopsies can be helpful in these situations.

A positive home test should always be followed up with professional medical advice.
