Sports Medicine FAQs

  • The initial sports medicine assessment is €120. Further follow-up appointments are €80 if required. In addition, joint injections, pain medications, X-rays or MRIs can have an additional cost, which the doctor can advise you about on the day, once he has a better understanding of what’s likely going on. Some of this cost may be covered by your healthcare insurance, or if you are a taxpayer you may be entitled to a partial tax refund. Contact your health insurance provider and revenue.ie to find out more.

  • We typically aim to refer patients to the diagnostic clinic with the quickest turnaround time. We will always check in with you first to see if your healthcare insurance will cover some of the cost.

  • There are many complimentary benefits to sports medicine alongside physio/physical therapy. A simple example may be to provide pain relief that will enable a patient to break the pain cycle, enabling them to complete their rehab exercises and return to activity. On other occasions, an underlying cause of injury may require further medical diagnosis and investigation involving an X-Ray, MRI or Specialist intervention.

    Sports medicine can support:

    • Movement screening, injury & illness prevention for elite athletes.

    • Diagnosis and management of the rehabilitation process.

    • Prescription of medications and delivery of pain relief injections.

  • To help with a new or chronic injury:
Sports medicine doctors can help diagnose and plan your recovery. Your injury does not have to have been caused by sport or exercise. Sports Medicine Doctors help with all kinds of accident-related and chronic injuries. Some injuries, like knee injuries and back problems, can persist and need long-term treatment including pain management as well as specific exercises.

To help with joint or tendon inflammation:
We can help diagnose all types of musculoskeletal conditions, including inflammatory conditions. These include conditions such as tendonitis, bursitis and osteoarthritis.

    To help with foot pain:
Getting a full review and clinical diagnosis is the first step in treating foot pain. Your Sports medicine doctor will advise you on the cause of your foot pain and then outline the best treatment strategies.

  • With an injury, comes pain. Sports medicine doctors can recommend methods of pain management suitable to you, such as:

    Pain relief injections:
Usually injected into a muscle or joint, and can help with both pain and inflammation.

    Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT):
This is a non-invasive pain method applied directly to the tissue of the injured area using a small handheld device.

    Neurofunctional acupuncture:
The use of fine needles for pain management and recovery.
